Safeclose is built around a concept called chattel — the legal term for movable property and related rights (think vehicles, equipment, financial instruments, or intellectual property rather than land or fixed structures). When you add a document in Safeclose, you classify it under one of these chattel categories so you and your organization can track, sign, and audit it consistently. Every chattel document you create belongs to your user account and is visible only to you unless it is included in a signing package shared by your organization.

What a document contains

Each chattel document has four main fields:
FieldDescription
TitleA short, descriptive name for the document (up to 200 characters).
DescriptionOptional free-text context about the document (up to 2,000 characters).
Chattel typeThe category of movable property or right this document covers.
LoanOptional financing details attached to the document (see below).

Loan details

If a document has associated financing, you can attach a loan record with the following fields:
FieldDescription
Provider nameThe name of the lender or financing institution.
Original amountThe full principal of the loan at origination.
Remaining amountThe current outstanding balance.
CurrencyThree-letter currency code (defaults to USD).
Maturity dateOptional date when the loan is scheduled to be paid off.
StatusEither Current (payments are up to date) or Behind (payments are overdue).
A loan status of Behind unlocks additional outreach and compliance features within Safeclose. Contact your organization administrator for details.

Chattel types

When you create a document, you choose one of the following chattel types to classify it. Safeclose supports the full range of movable collateral and intangible rights recognized in UCC-style filings and related legal frameworks.

Document ownership and privacy

Documents are scoped to your user account. Other members of your organization cannot browse your document list — they can only see documents when you or a manager includes them in a signing package that is sent to them.
